Burt's Bees 30th: Back to Basics

Last August 13, the Burt's Bees family invited me for their 30th anniversary.

Let me just gush here for a moment: I am so in love with the Burt's Bees team. Of all the brand events I've had the honor of attending, BB Philippines feels the most like family. Each of the two events I've been to has great corporate presence. They're not there to ceremonially toast a glass: everyone mingles and shares a few words about the soul of the brand. It can get long-winded at times but personally, I appreciate the passion behind the message especially when it's coupled with so much sincerity.

So I guess I found it hilarious that Burt Shavitz, the bee-keeper half of the husband-and-wife duo behind Burt's Bees, actually doesn't seem to give two shits about what his brand's become.

There's no company. My bees were the company. My truck was the company. My chainsaw was the company.
No one's ever owned me, no one's ever gonna own me.

Yet still, like the bad boy who wouldn't give us the time of day, we swoon over his products. I've been a fan of the basic Burt's balm ever since forever. I love the minty taste and how effective it is in nourishing my lips. Most importantly IT NEVER MELTS. Even if I keep it in my school skirt pockets and sometimes sit on it with my overheated butt, it stays a cylinder FOREVER!

For their 30th anniversary, Burt's Bees reminds us to go back to the basics. Their products may seem overly simple with iterations of beeswax lip products and skincare lines featuring only one natural ingredient highlight. The thing is, like our favorite lip balm, these things just work. I love that their ingredient lists feature a lot of natural ingredients AND a certifiable percentage of natural content. Most of their goods are upwards of 97% natural, as certified by the Natural Products Association.

L-R: Burt's Bees Facial Cleansing Towelettes, Orange Essence Facial Cleanser, Garden Tomato Toner and Milk and Honey Body Lotion

Their containers, on the other hand, are simplified to reduce waste and feature post-consumer recycled content or recycled plastic, in short. Burt's Bees is also cruelty-free! These are not particular concerns of mine as I haven't taken an eco-friendly nor cruelty-free beauty pledge but I know that those who have done so have a really hard time finding a brand that can serve them!

On another note, I'm so bummed that I haven't caught up with my Skincare Snippet posts. I wish I got my July SS Burt's Bees Daisy White post ready in time for the 30th but alas, I am currently fleshing out notes from April :( Spoiler alert: the Daisy White serum and moisturizer are my must-trys!

From my new loot, I'm pretty excited to try the Garden Tomato Toner and the Orange Essence Cleanser. The cleanser is sulfate-free so it doesn't adapt the usual, irritating cleansing method of detergent-based cleansers. As for the toner, I just really, really like toners, okay?! Hahaha!

I've heard great feedback on these two products (which are time-tested favorites!) and can't wait to see if I'll end up agreeing with the masses :D

*Disclosure: I was invited by the Burt's Bees team last August 13 to celebrate their 30 years at SEDA Hotel, BGC. They presented a brief company background to media partners including the video posted above. Liz Lanuzo held a mini watercolor workshop as an intermission. We were served lunch and provided with a bag of "time-tested originals" to try along with some press information.

I was not paid nor otherwise compensated to present this feature.

So proud of my watercolor worksheet :P
