Think Twice: Sigma Spa Brush Cleaning Glove Review

One or two years ago (yes, it's been that long) I bought the Sigma Spa Brush Cleaning Glove. It's a novel idea! I'm paranoid about getting my hands rough when I use them as a washing board for my brushes. Maybe if I had three teensy eye brushes to wash I wouldn't mind, but my current collection definitely won't keep my hands petal soft.

The solution: a textured silicone glove to keep my hands protected and help work off makeup stains from brushes. Not only does it prevent the sandpaper-age of hands, but the Wash - Rinse - Refine - Shape textures on the glove actually do work in loosening up makeup stains. Perfect, right?

Not exactly.

One problem: the giant mitt fits so loosely that swishing the brush sideways on its surface threatens to knock the whole thing off my hand. Even with the terry inner glove, this thing squiggles like a toddler on Coke fenced in time out corner. I have to make a clawlike open fist just to stretch the glove and keep it in place, which is mortifyingly tiring.

The first time you use it, especially compared to when you're making do with your hand, it's gonna feel awesome. Life changing. Mind blowing. Orgasmic. But once the jolty giant glove syndrome sets in, you're going to be so over this glove that you're going to take the inner terry glove off and just lay the damn thing on your sink.

If you want a brush cleaning tool, buy the Sigma Brush Cleaning Mat instead. Only... oops- it fastens through suction pads spread under the perimeter of the mat. It's not going to lay perfectly flat on your sink, unless you have those modern flat skins. That flat mat with bumpy edges is going to wave and wiggle under your 3D sink bowl and that's going to mean 0 resistance for your brush cleaning.

sigh sigh sigh.

Price:

Php 1950 from sumwearco.com. I've heard that Fred is closing up shop and changing businesses, so everything on the site is in mega sale.

Product Description:

The Sigma Brush Cleaning Glove is a silicone glove with various surfaces intended for deep-cleaning makeup brushes. One side has labelled textures for FACE brushes: Wash, Rinse and Refine. The other side contains the same 3 textures for EYE brushes, which have smaller and finer features than the FACE textures.

The inner side of the thumb contains a Shape texture meant to squeeze out water, comb and shape the brush heads. The glove comes with an white inner terry glove.

It comes in four colors: aqua, purple, pink and black.

How to Use:

Sigma Spa Brush Cleaning Glove: usage instructions on packaging
  1. Add a bit of brush solution and work on the Wash texture.
  2. Rinse off stain and soap with the Rinse texture. For minimally used powder brushes, I stop at this step and skip to Shape to avoid overworking my brushes.
  3. For deeper stains, add brush solution and work on the Refine texture.
  4. Rinse off stain and soap with the Rinse texture.
  5. Squeeze out water, comb the bristles and shape the brush head by pinching your thumb to your index finger using the Shape texture.

Performance:

The silicone glove coupled with the varying textures works wonders in loosening up the toughest dried out cream products. The Refine surface is especially useful for hard-to-remove stains. However, the looseness of the glove makes it a nuisance to work with.

Since it is silicone, I find that I have to use a high-lather solution so there's not too much friction when I'm working on my brushes. My stock of watery brush solution causes some fallout, which isn't a problem when I'm working with soapier solutions.

Unlike the Express Glove which has an open thumb, this glove completely covers your hand so you can't tell if the brushes are still soapy without taking off the whole thing.

Edge:

Fully protects your hand while offering a wide range of textures to deep-clean your makeup brushes with.

Rebuy:

No, only because it's not exactly the kind of thing you have to rebuy.

Beauty by Tellie score: 3.5 / 5 - useful but comes with its own set of problems

The Sigma Spa Brush Cleaning Glove is waaay better than my hands in scrubbing out and de-staining my makeup brushes. It'd be perfect if it weren't so loose upon my hand. The textures work amazingly well but for something that's meant to make brush cleansing easy, I'm going to have to nock off 1.5 points for the supreme hassle of the looseness of the glove.

I'm going to watch the Express Glove in action on Youtube and consider if that or the Daiso laundry eggs are a more suitable replacement.
